Coalby Day and Joe Terror have a rich history of musical collaboration, primarily as session musicians for each other. In 2025, they ventured into a more focused partnership, leading to the creation of their project, Friends of Owl.
The collaboration sparked with regular weekend trips where Joe would visit Coalby’s farm. During these visits, after a day's work on the farm, the duo would spend long nights writing songs and experimenting with their sound. Their creative process involved countless hours of jamming, even down to sharing the pen to forge a joint lyrical effort.
After about a month of intensive songwriting sessions, they forged a distinctive sound and completed writing their self-titled debut album. Friends of Owl’s music is characterized by detuned acoustic guitars and unique playing styles, emphasizing their mutual passion for alt-country, which is intricately woven into the fabric of their songs.
